Here is how to relax your mind in 60 seconds...

Focus on your breathing. This is not the usual breathing rehearsal described in many self-help books. What I'm trying to share with you is to be aware of your breathing. You can do this anywhere, it doesn't matter. I just want you to notice or give attentiveness to your breath.

When you inhale, try to feel the air advent into your nostril. Similarly, when you exhale, try to notice the air advent out from your nostril. Also, notice that your lower abdomen is increasing slightly when you inhale and contracting when you exhale.

If you take a short breath, notice that it's a short breath. If it's a long breath, notice that it's a long breath. In other words, just act as an observer - to gawk and notice how you breathe. Just do this for 60 seconds, and you will immediately feel the "stillness" in your mind.

Do this convention daily every time when you feel there is stress or tension. It will bring calmness to you almost immediately. It's easy to do and can be practiced in any place and anytime.

Another of my popular way to unwind and relax my mind is by using what is known as meditative sounds. There are many variaties, the one I use is called Binaural Harmonics. What I ordinarily do is just put on a headphone when I'm travelling by bus, train or plane. You can also listen to it when you're driving.

The meditative sounds are specially designed to stop your normal thought or mind patterns, bringing your mind to an altered state of consciousness. In a layman term, it basically means to get rid of all the clutters in your mind and instills calmness and stillness into it.

The first thing to look at is the memory card itself. Most entry level and amateur level cameras use Sd (Secure Digital) memory cards. Most professional and prosumer cameras use Cf (Compact Flash cards). In general, contract Flash cards tend to cost more, but offer higher read/write speeds, larger capacities and be less prone to failure than the accumulate Digital Cards. This narrative will focus on those two card types.

While there are many manufacturers of memory card out there, the top tier, and the selection of the vast majority of pros, are SanDisk and Lexar. These are also the only two brands than Nikon tests with and recommends.

SanDisk claims a Mtbf (Mean Time Before Failure) of over 1,000,000 hours - that's approximately 115 years before the midpoint card fails. Their cards are rated for over 10,000 insertions. A sophisticated fault and error administration law can rewrite data from a defective sector to a good sector on the fly. SanDisks built in Error Detection Code and Error revising Code to try to recover corrupted data automatically.

The regular (blue) SanDisk Cf card has an operating temperature range from 0°C to 70°C (32°F to 158°F). The ultimate Iii cards are rated with an operating range of -25°C to 85°C (-13°F to 185°F). They can withstand a shock of 2,000G (or about a 10 ft drop onto a concrete floor). Hard-drives can only withstand a 200-300G shock - a drop of less than 2 foot.

SanDisk quote less than 1 non-recoverable error in every 10^14 bits read (or one error for every 12.5 terabytes of data - or one out of every million 12.5Mb Raw files, or one out of every three million Fine Jpegs).

Overall the reliability from their contract Flash cards is significantly great than even the best hard drives on the market today.

One leading note: there are many fake SanDisk cards in the marketplace. Some of these are economy manufacturers cards with SanDisk stickers and packaging. Some are institution made with no ability control and put into SanDisk seeing boxes. Our best advice, is to only buy from a reputable retailer like Amazon.com or BhphotoVideo.com, and avoid buying memory cards that appear too cheap, are for sale on eBay, or some market stall while traveling etc - stick to reputable sources that are authorized dealers.

However, even with the best cards, errors do still occur. There are many, many millions of these cards in circulation today. Look at any Dslr internet forum, and you'll find reports of lost images. Most of these you'll note are either with economy cards, potentially fake SanDisk or Lexar cards, or caused by user error. If you take off the card from the camera before the camera has closed writing the data, you'll lose images that the camera hasn't completed writing. It's very easy to accidentally format a card, especially if you use many cards. There are reports of sure software applications importing the images from the card, then the user deleting the card, only to find that the application only imported the thumbnail Jpegs that were embedded into the Raw image files, not the actual Raw image files. In virtually all these cases, most of the images are recoverable using data recovery software.

Bottom line, trying to save on a memory card for a camera/lens law that costs hundred or thousands of dollars makes very little sense. If you stick with the top tier brands, memory cards are very, very reliable, and they are far from the weakest link in the typical users workflow.

Card Sizes: One Large Card vs. many Small Cards

How much card space you need depends on what format you shoot (Raw files are significantly larger than Jpeg's), and how many shots you are likely to take between getting to a computer to clear off and backup the cards. If I'm traveling, I've normally got a laptop with me so I can backup my cards every evening. Some days I may only take a dozen shots, but it's also not unknown for me to take several thousand shots in a day if I'm at an event with a lot of action.

On a Nikon D200 containing a blank 8Gb SanDisk card, the camera claims 480 shots are available for Raw shooting. This whole is normally conservative, as the size of the Raw file varies. My Nikon D300 normally gets colse to 700 shots on an 8Gb card using Lossless Compressed Nef files. If you switch the D200 to Fine Jpeg, it shows 1,300 shots available. If you settle on Raw plus Fine Jpeg, it shows 354 shots available. Your cameras hand-operated will contain a table showing similar data for your single model.

There are conflicting opinions as to if one large card is better, or if many smaller cards are. The consulation for smaller cards is, that if your card fails or you drop your camera in the ocean, you lose less data. The consulation for larger cards, is card failure is very rare, and largely recoverable. You also risk a much higher chance of dropping a card, getting it wet, sitting on it, losing it, accidentally erasing it, forgetting it or leaving it in your hotel room if you are managing many cards.

There are other things to consider also. Uploading to computer can take a long time - putting in one large card and leaving it to upload is a lot less work than swapping many smaller cards and uploading each one manually. A 4Gb size card is ideal if you back up to Dvd - it's the largest card size that will fully fit onto a Dvd, production the back up a easy drag and drop.

There is no right or wrong answer, we've standardized on 8Gb contract Flash cards - mainly because they hold a decent whole of shots and normally offer the best price per gigabyte. I'll carry up to ten of them with me when I'm traveling. As larger cards come to be more coarse and prices drop further, we'll go to larger sized cards. Card Speed: How Fast Do I Need?

If you are using a Cf of Sd reader, you are little by the speed of that. For the absolute fastest uploads, use a card that supports Udma (like the SanDisk ultimate Iv's, SanDisk Ducati's, and Lexar 300x) in a FireWire reader. For example, the SanDisk Ultra Ii 8Gb card claims a 15 Mb/second read speed, so that would take approximately 9 minutes to upload on an optimally configured system. The 8Gb Ducati card claims a 45Mb/second speed, so would take less than three minutes to upload.
2. Which camera do you use? The Nikon D200 does not retain Udma, so even though an ultimate Iv is faster in it than an ultimate Iii, the card is much slower than it is in the D300 - the D300 can handle a much faster data transfer rate.
3. How likely are you to fill the camera buffer? If you shoot scenery or take several minutes to form each shot, then you don't need a fast card. If you are shooting non-stop action and taking sequence after sequence at 8fps, you'll need as fast a card as possible. Cameras like the D200 and D300 have a big adequate on board buffer to store about 17 shots if you are shooting Raw. Once you've taken a picture, the camera writes it to the memory card and erases it from the buffer as soon as it can. Once the buffer is full, the camera won't let you take other picture until it's written an image to the memory card and made room in the buffer. If you are using an Ultra Ii card in a Nikon D300, this means you may only be able to take a shot every 2-3 seconds when the buffer is full. If you are using a Ducati card, you may still be able to manage a consolidate of frames a second. Then if you stop shooting, the Ultra Ii may take a little or so to get the buffer cleared and all written to the card. The Ducati card will allow the camera to write the images to the card and clear the buffer in seconds.

If you take your time to form each shot, and upload speed isn't leading to you, then memory card speed isn't important. If you are shooting action or sports and use a rapid frame rate frequently, then you want the fastest card, and camera, that you can afford.

Data Recovery either you've accidentally removed your memory card while the camera was still writing, deleted or formatted the wrong card, or the card has industrialized an error, it's normally inherent to retrieve some, if not all of the lost data.

The higher end cards from both SanDisk and Lexar come with their respective data recovery software packages on Cd. SanDisk's is called RescuePro, and Lexar's is called Image Rescue. Both are reputed to be very effective. A third part solution called PhotoRescue is also widely used and reputedly great than both SanDisk's and Lexar's offerings, fortunately we've not had the need to find out.

There was this joke about Old mother Hubbard who lived in a shoe. person saw all the children running all around and in and out of the house. It seemed like chaos. They asked her how come she had not had a nervous breakdown from all the work she had to do. She replied that she plainly was too busy. And that is so true. So what does it all mean? It means that if you find yourself being mildly depressed, the very best treatment for you at that exact occasion would be to take action. Taking some good, clear operation in your life will help you get back to yourself, as you were before you were depressed. Make an appointment today. You might even find some walk-in clinics in your own neighborhood). Suppose you are sad because your bunny died. Yes that is real sadness over a real event. But the sadness over this loss does not have to turn your whole life around. You can fix your sadness and come to be a limited happy by being active. Don't just sit there, do something! Go read a book. There is a fabulous book called, "How to Survive the Loss of a Love". I am depressed, too depressed to go fly a kite". And my write back to that is that is exactly why you are depressed. You are depressed because you are sitting around doing nothing. You sit around using all your time and all your power to think about your problems and then you get more depressed. Have you ever felt great mental about your problems? No, and that is the truth. Now, mental about solutions to problems, that is other story.

If you are mildly depressed, I advise that you take action. Take some lowly actions such as these:

• Go to the library and find the self-help section. Find books by Wayne W. Dyer, Og Mandino. Look straight through the shelves in that section and find every book that is applicable to you and your life. Read the books right there at the library. Find the book called, The greatest Miracle in the World by Og Mandino. Look at the book called, The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz, and remember to uncover that book called, The New Earth by Eckhart Tolle.
• Go to the bookstore, the one that has the headphones. Hang out in the music section and listen to all kinds of music. If you can afford to buy some music, then do so.
• Call some friends or relatives and arrange a visit. Get outdoors.
• See nature. Visit a park.
• Check your local newspapers and find out where the festivals are and attend some.
• Make plans. This is one of the best way to help yourself. Make plans. production plans is probably one of the hardest things to do when you are depressed because that is exactly what you do not want to do. But do it anyway. Today, right now, make some good, productive, creative plans.
• Connect with someone. If you do not want to call friends or relatives, call a withhold group or a hotline number.

Those are all good things to do on weekends (or while the week if you do not work or go to school). Now, while the week you might have appointments, school or work. Then do what your general schedule demands that you do. If you have a job, get up in the morning. I know this is tough when you are depressed. But if you need to, give yourself instructions -step by step- to get yourself out of the door and on the way to work.

Silly as that sounds, this kind of operation is what helps depressed individuals move and take action. Tell yourself, "get out of bed". This works if you live alone and have no one to remind you that you should get up in the morning. Be your own boss and remind yourself that you must get up in the morning.

Rising in the morning is a great accomplishment for a depressed individual. So do that. Have that as your first goal each and every day. Get up!

Know that your condition and your future depend on you getting up in the morning. You want to stay independent and you want to enjoy the good things in life. You will not accomplish that by staying in bed all day and night. If you can't seem to sleep at night. Reverse your schedule. Apply for an evening job and sleep in the daytime. Here is what you can do for yourself - go to the ocean or to the pool and watch the swimmers. See how that feels for you. Breathe in the ocean air. Just sit on the beach. You do not have to go in the water. Just watch the landscape for the first time. Then the next day, go there planning to put your feet in the water. Take small steps with all things you do. But take action. Try and remember all the things that made you happy in the past and try your best to take some actions in those directions. (Take only positive, constructive or creative actions, the actions that will not hurt you or others around you).

Take happiness!

• Be around nature more than you are now. Even in the city, look for the birds and squirrels around you. Draw them or take pictures of them.
• Take a one-day vacation somewhere out of state. You can travel a few hours and be in a thoroughly new environment. That will be a refreshing vacation for you even if only for one day. You can take a trip by plane for under one hundred dollars from a single state to other state. Or take a short Amtrak or car ride to a new environment.
• See a Broadway play, by yourself or with someone. Or go to a movie. See a high school or elementary performance.
• Build, create, knit or crochet something. Do something crafty. Check out Michaels craft market and go wild for one day.
• Help someone. Yes, you heard. Help someone. Helping person else puts your own problems in perspective and many habitancy gain as much as they help.

So, now your imagination is happening as it should happen. I'll give you one more idea on how to have a limited happiness if you are totally sad. "Oh, my iPod just stopped working." "How do you mean just stopped, did you drop it, did you leave it out in the rain did you go swimming with it on?" "No, I just charged it up one day and it was working and the next time I came to use it - a few weeks later - it wasn't working. Wouldn't even work when related to the Pc. Nothing"

Now, I'm as much of a technophobe as the next 50+ year old, but I was an early Apple Macintosh user, back in 1985/86 and am a huge fan of Apple and all things Apple. indeed they don't make stuff that just stops working - I mean I know times have moved on and everything, but the ethos of the company hasn't changed that much has it?

To my mind with my minuscule technical knowledge and my even more minuscule knowledge of batteries and rechargeable batteries at that, I was convinced this was a battery issue. He hadn't misused the thing at all. I assumed he'd also tried all things in his iPod by hand to sort the thing out, although I do have a bit of a reliance that if you need a by hand to use a thing it needs to be great designed - but that's other whole subject!

Thank goodness the iPod came from Amazon. I settled my order online (phew, within a year ago) and phoned them. No good. I emailed and got an immediate response - "to great serve Apple customers, Apple wants iPod customers to phone them direct."

Uh-oh I thought, here we go. But no, Apple buyer assistance was brilliant, I needed the iPod with me when I phoned so they could get me to try a integrate of things before they sent a replacement.

I duly took the iPod with me to the office the next day and called Apple. I had a reference whole so got right straight through to person who had all the details in front of them in an instant.

But worse than that the Msn chat loving, glued to the Pc screen, use the computer everyday, supposed technical whizz kids for whom the thing was bought, have never even opened the manual. (And with this well designed piece of kit - why would they?)

In case it goes wrong of course. The troubleshooting guide. So, don't assume your teenager has read his or her Apple iPod manual. He or she probably hasn't even downloaded, or installed it or whatever. Wouldn't recognize a troubleshooting guide if it slapped him or her in the face.

And why do I think I am entitled to pass on what could prove to be a pure gold nugget? Something that could save the hassle of a return, or the expense of a transfer iPod? Well just today, thoroughly unprompted, my own daughter handed me her very fancy 30 gig iPod with the words - could you have a look at this dad, it just stopped working - even when I recharge it, or connect it to the Pc - nothing.

This is the time to agree the on-stage sound and once it's set it doesn't get altered unless problems occur later, such as feedback issues or the crowd captivating more, or less, of the front of house sound than you'd anticipated. This is being professional. The whole band needs to agree not to change personel settings once you've decided on the balance. The sound engineer is the only someone who should adjust volumes once the balance is set and needs to remember that the mix he can hear in his headphones will sound distinct to someone in the middle of a crowded venue. The engineer, though, should never change that agreed on stage sound balance (unless individuals have been cranking things up!). Communication between band members, and between band and engineer, is essential. If anything has a problem, use the time between songs to say so and sort it!

Finally, the Pa. every person imagines this is the sound check - all that "one, two, one two" stuff. It's as a matter of fact the last part. Remember that the Pa needs to be set up so you can adjust the sound separately from that going to the monitors. Run through a song, this time setting the introductory volume for the vocals, they will sound loud without a crowd to soak them up and the sound will bounce back from the rear walls and floors. Adjust the back-line if necessary. Run through the noisiest songs for vocals and for guitars, checking what happens when effects kick in or heavy distortion is added. Check the quietest bits too. This is a time for polite tweaking and fine tuning, hopefully you'll have created the right balance in that first stage above! Play through a consolidate of numbers and make sure that every person is as happy as possible. Once the crowd is in you'll need to fine tune some more but with the introductory balance right, that's the easy part. Good luck!
